  • The Job: A 216 unit apartment complex with failing forced air electric resistance furnaces and air conditioning
  • The Goal: Remove and replace the 20 year old heating and cooling system in each apartment with modern, efficient equipment.
  • The Challenge: Individual gas lines could not be installed in each apartment. The only space available to install the new heating appliance and air cooled condenser was in a narrow, small closet on the outside wall
  • The Solution:

The project worked around the gas line problem by designing a system that would use a central gas fired boiler on the roof with hot water supply and return lines running into each apartment. the apartments used between 30,000 to 35,000 BTUs for heating and 1.5 to 2 tons for cooling.

Enerzone was asked to design a custom air handler that could meet the heating and cooling requirements and include the following features:

  • A hot water coil
  • an air conditioning coil
  • sized to fit into a very tight space and yet still be serviceable

Also, a custom air-cooled condensor was required for each apartment. It needed to fit into the same tight closet space, have a front supply and discharge, with downward facing connections for line sets.

The Product, Delivery and Installation

Enerzone designed and manufactured a narrow air handler that met the heating and cooling loads. An air-cooled condensor was also built narrow and tall due to space restrictions. Both pieces are serviceable from the interior.

The job required 432 pieces of equipment. Enerzone delivered them in five shipments to match the on-site storage limitations.

After the first delivery, an on site meeting was held that included the installing contractor, the project engineer and Enerzone. A recommendation that Enerzone make some minor changes to the design was well recieved and made the balance of the installation go more quickly and   save $$$$.

By working with the project engineer and contractors during each phase, Enerzone was able to use it's highly flexible computer controlled manufacturing equipment to provide the best equipment suited for this job.
